How is a Hair Transplant Performed?

Hair is the crown of the head. Losing your hair, for whatever reason, can be traumatic. It can be particularly difficult for younger men who may be dating and are not ready to look prematurely old. A number of treatments are available, including products like minoxidil and finasteride, but it is hard to beat a hair transplant when it comes to restoring natural hair.

Hair Loss Causes and Treatments

Nutritional deficiencies and hormonal fluctuations are two of the main culprits when it comes to female hair loss. Male hair loss tends to be due to the presence of a male hormone called DHT. This hormone is converted from testosterone, and some men can be genetically sensitive to its presence. It can build up in hair follicles, stunting their growth and causing them to gradually miniaturize. Eventually, the hair follicles grow dormant and no longer produce hair.

Hair Transplant

A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure in which we remove numerous hairs, including the root, and transplant it into balding areas on the scalp. The technique that was more commonly used in the past has largely been replaced by another procedure that offers more aesthetically pleasing results.

Once the hair has been transplanted, it will develop its own blood supply and eventually appear and function as any other hair on the scalp.

Good Candidates

Both men and women of any race may make a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure if they have enough remaining hair on their scalp that is healthy and available for transplantation to bare areas on the scalp or an area that is thinning. Good candidates also have the ability to grow hair on the part of the scalp where it will be transplanted.

What to Expect

The time to complete a hair transplant procedure varies based upon how many hairs will be transplanted, but the procedure typically takes between four and eight hours total. A larger transplant may require you to return the following day.

Patients typically remain awake during their procedure and only need local anesthesia to numb the scalp. We begin by removing healthy hair from a donor area. We may remove the hair by cutting a strip of the scalp or use individual hairs. The second option takes longer but involves less complications and tends to offer a more natural result.
